Climate and weather
The prevailing winds in this region come from west or northwest, this region is also influenced by thermal winds. Around Sicily the stronger wind called sirocco may appear – it virtually shows up several times per month. It comes from northern Africa, where it originally starts as a sandy storm – very hot and dry. Often the sirocco is preceded by a light swell. On the eastern side of the low pressure area it reaches Sicily and southern Italy – often still in this hot and dry phase. An extremely cold and often very dry northwestern wind is known as mistral or tramontane. Originally the mistral is a cold, at times stormy fall wind coming from France from the Cévennes and through the Rhone valley into the sea territory between Sardinia/Sicily and northern Africa. In Italy the weather is mild from spring until autumn. Depending on the region the spring can start differently, in Sicily the spring already begins in the middle of February and covers the island with an enchanting layer of green and floral glory. You can still expect summer temperatures until October even if the first cooler days and especially night already come back.
